Scanning for transfer to a DVD or CD.

For back up of an entire photo collection or selected images including restoration.

To enable reprinting of slides or prints including enlargements.

For sending images over the internet.

To enable publication of your images.

Your images are scanned into a computer, 35mm slides and negatives will have most scratch, dust and fingerprints removed, the image is enhanced by adjusting brightness, contrast and colour balance.

Badly damaged or faded images can be repaired for an additional minimum charge of £1 per image. Quotations can only be given after seeing the damage.

File Format - Jpeg is recommended and used if nothing is specified. Tiff is often required by commercial printers but most other formats may be specified.

Transfer to DVD or CD is normally done at the recommended  resolutions below, but others may be asked for. The resolution and size of image both have to be considered. The smaller the image the higher the resolution required. A 6" x 4" print at 600dpi if enlarged to 8" x 12" will become 300dpi if nothing else is changed. Please ask for advice if you are not sure of your requirements.

300 dpi - If the only requirement is to have prints, especially large images, reprinted without enlargement, then ask for this. Commercial printers normally work to this resolution. Photo quality pc printers use this as a standard but will often produce good quality prints from 150 dpi images. Photos sent over the internet or for web pages normally use 72 dpi for fast transmission and download times, but quality is poor.

600 dpi - Recommended for prints 6" x 4" or over to enable enlargement and minor restoration.

1200 dpi - The maximum resolution for negatives over 35mm, prints or other images.

1350 dpi - Recommended for 35mm slides or negatives to produce high quality 6" x 4" prints. A good compromise for back up of photos allowing approximately 150 images to be stored on a cd. Normally used for slideshows.

2700 dpi - Recommended for 35mm slides or negatives to produce high quality enlargements up to A4 size. About 70 images can be stored on a cd.

4000 dpi - Equivalent to approximately a 20 million pixel photo from a digital camera. The film grain is normally visible before pixilation. File sizes are huge but for the storage of important photos or maximum size enlargements this is the obvious choice.
